10 Common Citation Mistakes Students Make (and How to Fix Them)

Marked-up essay showing citation corrections

Most citation errors are not dramatic acts of dishonesty. They are small, avoidable slips, a missing date here, an inconsistent format there, that quietly drain marks from otherwise good papers. Here are the ten that come up most often.

  • Mixing styles. Using APA in-text citations with an MLA Works Cited page is a classic mistake. Pick one style and apply it everywhere.
  • Missing in-text citations. A reference list entry is not enough; every borrowed idea needs an in-text citation too.
  • Citing without reading. Never copy a citation from another paper’s reference list without checking the original source yourself.
  • Wrong capitalisation. APA uses sentence case for titles; MLA uses title case. They are not interchangeable.
  • Forgetting page numbers for quotations. Direct quotes almost always require a page or paragraph number.
  • Inconsistent author order. Reference lists are alphabetised by the author’s surname, not by the order you found the sources.
  • Italics in the wrong place. Book and journal titles are italicised; article titles are not.
  • Using a URL instead of a citation. A bare link is not a citation. You still need author, title and date where available.
  • Ignoring n.d. and et al. When information is missing or there are many authors, the styles have specific abbreviations. Use them.
  • Never proofreading the reference page. Reference pages deserve the same careful proofreading as the essay itself.

The habit that prevents most of them

Build your reference list as you write, not the night before the deadline. Each time you use a source, add it immediately. This keeps your in-text citations and your reference page in sync and removes the last-minute panic that causes most errors. A citation generator handles the formatting, but the discipline of citing as you go is what truly protects your marks.
